Six Days. Known Science. No Mythology.
What if the first two chapters of Genesis were not poetry, not allegory, and not mythology — but a compressed sequence map of creation, told to people who had no framework for cosmology, geology, or molecular biology? What follows is an attempt to read Genesis 1 and 2 not as theology, but as science recalled from the outside looking in. No miracles required. No faith demanded. Just the sequence, and what we now know fills each interval.
This is written before the question of infinity. Before the question of what was conscious. Before the question of God’s intent. Those are real questions — they belong elsewhere. Here, we stay in the observable.
Day One — Light and the Separation of Dark from Light
Genesis 1:1–5: “In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth… and God said, Let there be light.”
The Big Bang. Approximately 13.8 billion years ago. Before that moment there was no space, no time, no matter — nothing that science can reach behind. In the first fraction of a second, energy and light exploded outward. For the first 380,000 years the universe was opaque, a plasma too dense for light to travel through. Then recombination: electrons bound to nuclei, the fog cleared, and photons streamed free for the first time. Light separated from dark not as metaphor but as physics. The cosmic microwave background we still detect today is the afterglow of that first day’s light.
Duration: roughly 380,000 years of opacity, then billions of years of cosmic formation — galaxies condensing, stars igniting, the first supernovae seeding space with heavy elements.
Day Two — The Expanse: Water Above and Water Below
Genesis 1:6–8: “Let there be a vault between the waters to separate water from water.”
Earth forms approximately 4.5 billion years ago from the accretion of solar nebula material. Early Earth is bombarded — asteroids and comets deliver volatile compounds including water. The planet differentiates: a molten iron core, a rocky mantle, and a surface that begins to cool. Water vapour fills the atmosphere. As the surface temperature drops below 100°C, rain falls — for potentially millions of years continuously. Oceans form below. Water vapour, clouds, and what will become weather systems form above. The expanse between — what Genesis calls the vault or firmament — is the atmosphere itself: the layer that separates the water locked in the hydrosphere below from the water cycling through the sky above.
Duration: roughly 500 million years of heavy bombardment and ocean formation.
Day Three — Land, and the First Life
Genesis 1:9–13: “Let the water under the sky be gathered… and let dry ground appear… Let the land produce vegetation.”
Two distinct events, compressed into one day. First: tectonic activity. The early crust buckles and shifts, continents begin their long emergence from the global ocean. Land appears. Second: life begins. Approximately 3.5 to 3.8 billion years ago, the first self-replicating molecules emerge in warm, mineral-rich water. RNA first, then DNA — the instruction set for all life that will follow. The first organisms are prokaryotes: single-celled, no nucleus, but alive, metabolising, reproducing. Cyanobacteria follow, and with them photosynthesis — the process that will, over the next two billion years, oxygenate the atmosphere entirely. The Genesis account calls these first creations vegetation. The language is compressed, but the sequence is correct: land first, then the emergence of life that draws energy from the sun.
Duration: hundreds of millions of years of tectonic emergence; two billion years of microbial and early plant life.
Day Four — The Sun Made Functional, Seasons Established
Genesis 1:14–19: “Let there be lights in the vault of the sky to separate the day from the night… to mark sacred times, and days and years.”
The sun existed from Day One. What changes on Day Four is that the atmosphere — now transformed by billions of years of photosynthesis — becomes transparent enough for the sun to be seen clearly from the surface for the first time. The oxygenation of the atmosphere also creates the ozone layer, which filters ultraviolet radiation and makes surface life viable at scale. With a stable, breathable, transparent atmosphere in place, the sun now functions as a clock: governing seasons, tides, circadian rhythms, migration, reproduction cycles. Genesis records not the creation of the sun, but the moment the sun became legible and governing to life on the surface.
Duration: the Great Oxygenation Event spans roughly 2.4 to 2.0 billion years ago.
Day Five — Creatures of Sea and Sky
Genesis 1:20–23: “Let the water teem with living creatures, and let birds fly above the earth.”
The Cambrian Explosion, approximately 541 million years ago. In geological terms — tens of millions of years, a blink — virtually all the major animal body plans appear in the fossil record simultaneously. The seas fill with arthropods, molluscs, echinoderms, and the first chordates. Later, life colonises the air: insects first, then the archosaurs that will eventually become birds. The sequence in Genesis — sea creatures first, then creatures of the sky — matches the fossil record exactly. Marine animal life precedes aerial life by hundreds of millions of years.
Duration: from the Cambrian Explosion (~541 Ma) through the evolution of flight (~350–150 Ma).
Day Six — Land Animals, and Then Us
Genesis 1:24–31: “Let the land produce living creatures… Then God said, Let us make mankind in our image.”
Life moves onto land: first plants, then invertebrates, then vertebrates. Amphibians, reptiles, the great age of dinosaurs, the rise of mammals after the Cretaceous-Paleogene extinction 66 million years ago. Among mammals: primates. Among primates: Homo sapiens, appearing approximately 300,000 years ago, with behavioural modernity — language, symbol, burial, art — emerging perhaps 70,000–100,000 years ago.
What Genesis calls being made “in the image” marks scientifically the emergence of a creature capable of modelling its own existence, asking why, and recording the question. The sequence is correct: livestock and wild animals precede us. We are the last to arrive on the sixth day.
Duration: from land vertebrates (~375 Ma) through to Homo sapiens (~300,000 years ago).
The Seventh Day — Rest
Genesis 2:2–3: “By the seventh day God had finished the work… so on the seventh day he rested.”
No new body plans have emerged since. The processes of evolution, geology, and cosmology continue — but the architectural framework of life on Earth has not fundamentally changed since the emergence of modern humans. The seventh day, in this reading, is now. We are in it.
What This Is Not
This is not a proof of God. It is not a disproof either. It is a recognition that the sequence encoded in Genesis 1 and 2 — light, water and atmosphere, land and first life, the sun as functional clock, sea and sky creatures, land animals and then humans — matches, in broad and remarkable order, what geology, biology, physics, and cosmology have independently established.
That correspondence was what first caught my attention, long before the question of infinity entered my thinking. Whether the author of Genesis was a scientist, a visionary, or simply someone listening very carefully to something — that question belongs to a different page.
