DNA, Temperament, and Why Not

Premise: A society seeking a common morality must understand the people who will live within it: embodied, different, dependent on one another, and shaped by inheritance and experience.

Nature is within us. DNA carries much forward, while genetic variation makes each generation different. Survival and reproduction belong deep within the history of life. Our inquiry asks how we live with that inheritance—and how we build institutions that help us balance our needs without making another person’s life the price of our satisfaction.

What DNA helps architect

DNA participates in building and maintaining a living body. “Architect” is a useful image, provided we remember that development also depends on nutrition, surroundings, experience, and chance. Genes influence both appearance and bodily function; many traits involve complex interactions with physical and social environments.

CharacteristicWhat genetic inheritance helps shape
AppearancePigmentation, eye and hair colour, hair texture, facial features, height, and body proportions.
Body structureBones, muscles, organs, connective tissues, and capacities for movement.
SensesAspects of sight, hearing, smell, taste, and touch.
MetabolismHow the body processes nutrients, uses energy, and regulates its functions.
Protection and repairImmune responses, clotting, cell maintenance, and tissue repair.
Reproduction and growthSexual development, reproductive physiology, growth, and maturation.
TemperamentDispositions involving emotional reactivity, activity, sociability, attention, and persistence.
Learning and behaviourContributions to the nervous system and capacities that develop through experience.
Health and ageingSusceptibilities, bodily resilience, and aspects of change over a lifetime.

These are categories of influence, not a catalogue of fixed outcomes. The National Library of Medicine’s guide to human traits explores examples in more detail.

How continuity and variation work

  • Inheritance: genetic material passes from parents to children.
  • Recombination: paired chromosomes exchange DNA segments during the formation of eggs and sperm, producing new combinations. This is one part of the “randomizer” Philip describes. NHGRI explanation.
  • Mutation: DNA sequences change. Changes in eggs or sperm can be inherited; changes confined to other body cells generally are not passed to children. NHGRI explanation.
  • Gene regulation: cells control which genes are active, when, and to what extent. Regulation helps cells develop different functions and respond to conditions. How genes are regulated.
  • Epigenetic regulation: chemical modifications to DNA and associated proteins can affect gene activity without changing the underlying DNA sequence. This does not mean that an ancestor’s memories are written into our DNA. NHGRI fact sheet.
  • Development and environment: cells, bodily systems, and surroundings interact as a person grows and lives. Inheritance is expressed within conditions, rather than independently of them.

Temperament: the differences we bring

Some people approach a new situation readily; others pause. Some react quickly or persist longer. Temperament research finds genetic and environmental influences on these differences. Complex combinations are involved; there is no single gene that explains a person’s temperament.

Heritability describes variation in a population under particular conditions. It does not tell us what percentage of an individual is “caused by DNA,” or whether that person can change. Family resemblance may also reflect shared surroundings and practices.

Survival, reproduction, and care

We begin as living beings whose lineages survived and reproduced. Hunger, vulnerability, attachment, sexuality, and care belong within our account of humanity. Individuals experience these differently; reproduction is neither everyone’s desire nor a measure of anyone’s worth.

My interpretation is that the search for a moral society must keep these needs and differences in view. Protection can become exclusion. Provision can become possession. Care can widen beyond our household—or stop at its boundary. We must examine when and how those shifts occur.

Why temperament belongs within {《 ¿ why not ?》}

People do not enter a common project with identical fears, rewards, reactions, or capacities. A plan that assumes everyone will respond as its author does has already overlooked part of reality.

Temperament is one part of the explanation. Scarcity, learned beliefs, institutions, incentives, and unequal power also matter. We cannot explain a ruler’s conduct, a society’s hierarchy, or an individual’s choices by pointing to DNA alone.

For our proposed social order, this suggests practical questions: can a cautious person question a confident leader? Can someone who needs time still participate? Do institutions reward domination or responsible cooperation? Can people challenge a decision without losing their livelihood or belonging?

Understand the people, as well as the process, before attempting to redesign either.

Carry this understanding into the five threads

Truth asks what the evidence supports. Reverence remembers our inheritance and respects life. Wisdom considers how to work with our differences. Equality affirms that those differences do not rank human worth. Unity asks how we cooperate without requiring identical temperaments or beliefs.

The order follows the question. The Golden Eye asks us to examine ourselves as carefully as we examine others.

My more cannot be your less. Biology helps explain the people who must live that principle. It does not confer a right to rule another person.
