Visa Canada

The Visa Canada engagement brought Philip to one of the most consequential inflection points in North American payments: the national adoption of EMV chip card technology. While the United States debated, Canada moved — and PA&A was part of the team building the strategy that made it happen.

Working with Visa Canada, Philip helped develop the national EMV adoption strategy — driving the migration away from magnetic stripe cards across the entire Canadian card payment ecosystem. This meant working across issuers, acquirers, merchants, and networks to align on a single deployment roadmap at country scale. Canada’s EMV rollout became one of the most successful national migrations in the world, and one of the strongest proofs-of-concept for what the US would eventually need to do.

The Canada work also brought Philip in front of a generation of Canadian payments professionals who were learning chip technology for the first time. The educational dimension of that engagement — the presentations delivered to Canadian Credit Union executives and financial services audiences — sits in the archive of Philip’s early presentations and remains a record of how a country learns to change its infrastructure.
