Strategic Highlights:

 

Situation:  Canada was moving to EMV based smart cards technology “Chip and PIN”.

Various Clients needed to redefine their canadian operations, product and technical solutions. 

Clients:  Lowe's, Canadian Tire, The Exchange, CUCC, CUETS, Dexit, VanCity

Result:  Created various strategies, plans and business cases.  

Impacting:

·         Architected necessary changes to 1800 instances of a point of sale system, central payment switch and new settlement and reconciliation systems capable of supporting a peak of 3,000,000 transactions per day.

·         Defined solution to support 600 credit unions and 800,000 MasterCard and Interac debit and credit cards.

·         Wrote strategy to manage migration to EMV for 2 million MasterCard and 450 stores.

·         Key member of team that produced response to Qualification resulting to be selected as one of the three bidding for the $250+ million program.

Situation:  Key members of the executive team could not agree on which alternate Lighter-Than-Air (LTA) power generation solutions to fund. 

Impact: Key management and organizational changes.

 

Visa Canada, Toronto, Canada, 2002-2003

Vice President, Emerging Products and Technologies

Member of the executive committee mandated to reinvigorate the group responsible for driving the adoption of new products and technologies in support of the 23 member banks.  Key objective: launch Chip and PIN – EMV.

Strategic Highlights:

·         Foreseeing a growth in fraud, led the Visa Canada Board to approve the roadmap for the implementation of EMV based smart card or “Chip and PIN”.

·         Entered into dialogues with MasterCard and Interac with the goal of getting them to also embrace Chip and PIN.

·         Introduced a series of initiatives to position Visa in the contactless, mobile, pre-paid, co-branded, transit and debit.

·         Represented Visa Canada at the Visa International Global Product Development Council.

·         AT&T:  Three-year engagement as technology advisor and mentor to the calling card, multi-media (Internet Services) and Universal Card Services divisions.

·         GlobeID:  Analysis of markets and industry trends leading to a recommendation to cease further funding.

·         Oracle EMEA:  Interim executive - Director Financial Services Consulting Europe Middle East and Africa, initiated the development of a Center of Excellence to provide country teams with key Business and technical consulting resources. 

·         Blue Cross Blue Shield of Minnesota:   Led complex data conversion project

·         Unicate BV:  Multi-year engagement focusing on developing the “go-to-market” strategy for a new technology capable of proving irrefutable proof of identity

Director IT Strategy

Initial assignment:  assumed the role of Interim General Manager of European Payment Systems Services (EPSS), and served as member of executive team responsible for merging EPSS, EuroCard, and Eurocheque.

·         Planned and secured board approval to expand operations focus on modernizing applications.

·         Drove new technology developments and implemented quality improvement.

·         Convinced the Board to triple the size of the IT division.

·         Key leader of the consortium that developed EMV, the international standard for Smart Card payments.

Served as consultant responsible for evaluating technology RFPs for Smith New Court (major UK stockbroker) and its new London trading room

Reset the strategic directive and rebuilt confidence in the telecommunications department.  Boost departmental confidence while reducing headcount by 30% and capital equipment and annual expenses by 25%.  Successfully integrated EF Hutton trading staff (aquired in 1988) into operation while continuing to streamline costs and staff.
